Fireworks in fourth spark PHS

SHEBOYGAN – A seven-run uprising in the bottom of the fourth inning powered the Plymouth Panthers to a 10-7 baseball victory over Whitefish Bay Saturday afternoon at the Field of Dreams.

The game was switched from the PHS diamond to Sheboygan because of wet field conditions from Friday night’s rain. The nonconference win raised the Panthers’ record to 20-3. PHS has won 20 of its last 21 games.

The Blue Dukes, who play in the rugged North Shore Conference, slipped to 13-12.

The Panthers sent 12 batters to the plate in the fourth as they snapped a 3-3 tie to go up 10-3. PHS had five hits and drew two walks in the frame. Ryan Schieble ripped an RBI double, Cole Karczewski, Clay Henning and Tyler Willeford had RBI singles and Zac Cain hit a sacrifice fly.

Henning keyed the Panthers’ 11-hit onslaught with three hits, followed by Luke Held and Luke Hojnacki with two apiece. Henning and Held belted solo home runs – their first homers of the season.

Henning also had a team-high two RBIs, three runs and two steals.

“Whitefish Bay is a good team and this was a good barometer of how we’re doing at this time of year,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

“It was a good day for us. It was a team effort.”

Matt Rhude was the winning pitcher and Zac Cain earned a save. Rhude allowed seven earned runs on seven hits with six walks and two strikeouts in five innings. Cain threw two scoreless innings to finish up. He gave up one hit and one walk while striking out two.

Nick Lackney and Calvin Gavic paced the Blue Dukes in hits with two each. Lackney and Grant Menard had a team-best two RBIs apiece.
