Seven-run frame propels Panthers to rout

KEWASKUM – The Plymouth Panthers exploded for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to spark a 9-1 drubbing of Kewaskum in an Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball game here Wednesday.

PHS, which has clinched the EWC championship, improved to 16-0 in the league (19-3 overall). The defending conference champion Indians fell to 6-5 in the EWC (6-9 overall).

The Panthers sent 13 batters to the plate in the sixth and banged out eight hits to go with three walks as they mounted a 9-1 lead. Luke Hojnacki collected two hits in the frame, including a two-run single. Jake Richards smacked a two-run double, Tyler Willeford cracked an RBI double and Ryan Schieble and Luke Held contributed RBI singles.

Hojnacki spearheaded the Panthers’ 14-hit attack with three hits and also had a team-high three RBIs. Richards, Held, Clay Henning and Willeford added two hits each.

Richards and Held contributed two RBIs apiece. Henning and Willeford scored a team-high two runs each.

“The sixth inning was impressive. It was our best inning of the year. We strung together hits and it was a lot of fun,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

Schieble and Richards combined on a five-hitter, with Schieble getting the win after starting and going five innings. Schieble allowed one earned run on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Richards threw two scoreless innings with a walk and two strikeouts.

“Schieble and Richards did a good job. They kept the ball around the plate and kept it low. The defense was very strong [with zero errors],” said Cain.

Brett Boegel led the Indians’ offense with two hits and an RBI. Boegel took the loss – allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in five innings.
