PHS’ Ebbott EWC Player of the Year

¦ Three Panthers named to first team

Senior forward Becca Ebbott of Plymouth was voted the Eastern Wisconsin Conference’s Player of the Year” for the 2013 girls soccer season by the league coaches.

Ebbott, one of five players who repeated on the All-EWC first team, led the league in goals scored with 21 overall, including 15 against EWC opponents. She scored eight goals and had five assists (21 total points) in the seven matches that counted toward the conference title.

She is the Panthers’ first EWC Player of the Year since Jaci Kulow in 2009.

The Panthers’ other first-team players are senior defender Rachel Francis and junior defender Meghan Roelse. Francis was also a first-team defender last year.

PHS has two second-team picks in junior forward Elle Klecka and senior midfielder Sigrun Adalgeirsdottir, an exchange student from Iceland. Panther junior goalkeeper Sophie Hau earned honorable mention.

“Becca had an incredible season,” said Panther head coach Brad Feick. “Of her 21 goals, seven were game-winning goals.

“In addition to scoring, she also set her teammates up as she was tied for the team assist lead with eight. Against Campbellsport when we needed to win the conference championship, she tallied three goals.”

The Panthers shared the EWC crown with Sheboygan Falls at 6-0- 1.

“Rachel made timely offensive runs that helped overload the opposition’s defense. Her speed helps set her apart from her peers,” said Feick.

She doesn’t sit back and wait as the opposition attacks, instead, she aggressively challenges opponents. She along with Meghan Roelse anchor our defense.”

The Panthers allowed only one goal in 11 matches against EWC opponents.

“Meghan was one of our centerbacks. Her off-season work ethic is unmatched,” Feick noted.

“She aggressively challenged opponents. Not only does she challenge physically but she also has significantly improved her passing. Her speed allowed her to pursue quick forwards and prevent scores.”

Adalgeirsdottir ranked second on the PHS team overall in goals with eight and had four assists.

“She may have been our most memorable player. Her footwork, delivery and free kicks were amazing,” the coach observed.

Klecka contributed four goals and four assists on the season.

“Elle attacked the right side of the field and really challenged opponents vertically. She’s a fast and physical player,” said Feick.

Hau surrendered only six goals all season, including just one against EWC opponents. She made 35 saves overall and 11 in seven league matches.

“It’s tough being the goalie on a team that didn’t give up many shots on goal to get recognition. I was happy to see the conference coaches recognize her play,” Feick said.

“She aggressively came out after through balls and came up with some really big saves.”

Senior forward Paige Birschbach of Campbellsport was voted to the first team for the third straight season. Other first-team repeaters include Kewaskum senior midfielder Shannon Miller and New Holstein junior midfielder Danielle Brenner.
