Tigers’ big rally tops Dutchmen in CLC contest

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers stormed back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the Oostburg Flying Dutchmen, 10-8, in a Central Lakeshore Conference baseball game here Monday night.

Oostburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one-half inning, keyed by Jonny Daane’s two-run double. The Dutchmen added two runs in the top of the second to build a 7-0 cushion.

The Tigers answered with six runs in the bottom of the second to slice Oostburg’s lead t0 7-6. Terry Fritsch cracked an RBI single, Austin Edge knocked in a run with a fielder’s choice, three runs scored on passed balls and the other on an error.

Howards went ahead 10-7 with a four-run third. Edge’s two-run single ignited the outburst.

The Tigers, who overcame six errors, hiked their CLC record to 9-6 (11-7 overall). Zach Fritz allowed only one run (unearned) in four innings of relief to notch the win. Fritz gave up two hits and no walks while striking out one.

“Zach Fritz was the difference in this one – only yielding no earned runs,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

“Fritz came in and did the job again. I was really impressed with his performance tonight. His strike/ball ratio was impressive.”

Derek Gabsch led the Tigers in hits with three and Edge had two. Edge had a team-high three RBIs. Terry Fritsch and Alex Strege scored a team-high two runs each.

“Key hits by Austin Edge and Derek Gabsch were big. A couple of fine plays by shortstop Terry Fritsch and pop-ups caught by Gabsch [catcher] also added to our defense,” said Weber.

Howards was outhit 10-7 but was aided by eight walks.

Daane, Kyle Swart and Lukas Meerdink paced the Dutchmen in hits with two apiece. Daane led in RBIs with a pair.

Meerdink was the losing pitcher as he went the distance. He allowed eight earned runs on seven hits with eight walks and two strikeouts.

Bryce Hoffmann started on the mound for the Tigers and threw three innings. Hoffmann gave up seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with two walks and zero strikeouts.
