Cascade still exploring options for garbage and recycling collection

by Abby Lynn Harvey of The Review staff

CASCADE – The search continues for an alternate garbage and recycling haulERfor the village.

Previously the village was served by Veolia Environmental Services, however the company changed its name and with that the village saw a large increase in price. Unhappy with this increase, the village set out to explore different options.

In the interest of keeping their options open the village opted out of a contact with Advanced Disposal and is currently on a month-to-month plan, which, while more expensive, they hope will end up saving up in the long run as they are free to switch to a different hauler should they find a less expensive option.

A contract proposal has been supplied by Waste Management and one has been requested from J-D Trucking of Waldo.

Since the beginning of the Village’s search, Advanced Disposal has expressed interest in being a part of the bidding process and will be allowed to do so.

First Responder Captain Darrel Kasuboski reported to the board that on several occasions he has had trouble maneuvering the ambulance into and out of the fire station do to an illegally parked race car. Although the no parking signs are difficult to see - one obscured by trees, the other faded - it was concluded that this causes a valid safely hazard and will be handed off to the police chief.

Although the Fire Department has agreed to provide the labor to replace the roof on the brat stand, work will be halted as it has been decided that the entire structure may need to be rebuilt. The Fire Department will form a committee, Trustee Craig DeSmidt reported, and they will report back with their findings.

The next meeting of the Cascade Village Board will be held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Items to be discussed include an update on the alley behind Marshall’s Gas ‘n; Goods, an update on the parking situation on E Water Street, and further discussion on garbage haulers.
