Division-leading Mercs drub Flames

PLYMOUTH – The Cedarburg Mercs exploded for 20 hits as they pounded the Plymouth Flames, 13-2, in a Land O’ Lakes Baseball League game July 10 at Loebe Field.

Cedarburg, which avenged its only loss in league play this season, upped its first-place Northern Division record to 11-1. The Flames dropped to 5-5 in the division (11-9 overall).

The Mercs took command ______________________ of the game early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after only three innings. Nolan Gilbertson’s two-run homer highlighted the Mercs’ four-run outburst in the top of the second which made it 6-0.

A five-run eruption by Cedarburg in the eighth turned the game into a rout at 12-2. The key hit was a two-run single by John Vandenberg.

Gilbertson and John Regnitz sparked the Mercs’ attack with four hits each. Contributing two each apiece were Brian Bert, Vandenberg, Justin Stiever, Zack Lauterbach and Brandon Nedoma.

Gilbertson and Vandenberg led Cedarburg in RBIs with three each and Nedoma had two. Gilbertson scored a team-high three runs.

Nick Wilson scored the Flames’ first run on an error in the third. Plymouth’s other run came in the sixth when Michael DuCharme’s single drove in Ryan Wachter who had singled earlier.

Joe Daniels was the winning pitcher. Daniels started and threw six innings – allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Taylor Piel earned a save with three scoreless frames. Piel fanned an impressive six batters, allowed zero hits and walked one.

Wachter led the Flames in hits with two.

Travis Christenson was the Flames’ starting hurler and took the loss. Christenson surrendered 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits with two walks and three three strikeouts in 7-1/3 innings. Wachter finished up – allowing three runs (all earned) on five hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 1-2/3 frames.
