Board updated on curriculum efforts

HOWARDS GROVE—Middle School Principal Andy Hansen presented a report on curriculum, assessment and instruction efforts that are ongoing during this summer and how they will be implemented throughout the 2013-14 school year at the Monday, July 15 meeting of the Howards Grove School Board.

Hansen stressed that student learning and achievement will be the school’s focus.

English language arts will continue to be a focus, including writer’s workshop methodology in grades K-12. A reader’s workshop in-service is scheduled for instructors Au- gust 21-22.

Math, science and social studies will also continue as main curriculum courses.

Smarter balance, WKCE (Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination) and educator effectiveness will be used as assessment programs during the 2013-14 school year. Reader’s workshop, content reading, writing and math expressions instruction will be the focus in the classroom.

Superintendent Chris Peterson discussed a report related to employee health insurance. The insurance committee has had several meetings to consider insurance options for the district presented by representatives from the National Insurance.

At the July 23 Special Board Meeting, the board will consider three bids received from three different health insurance providers.

Resignations of staff members Ken Odekirk, Mike Schroeder and Gary Scheller were regretfully approved. All three teachers accepted positions with other schools.

A fund raising car wash for the pom pom squad was approved.

The school board acknowledged and expressed their gratitude to the PTO for field trip donations. The Howards Grove Boosters and Millersville Recreation Department were thanked for a donation toward high school track high jump standards and volleyball standards.
