Big machinery means big screen at GTS

PLYMOUTH - Glacier Transit and Storage will be going bigscreen at their new County PP/ Willow Road facility - on the roof, that is.

The Plan Commission Thursday directed GTS to increase the height of a screening wall on top of their new building to screen mechanical equipment for the cold storage facility.

“When we originally approved the site plan (for GTS) the equipment stuck above the screen about two feet but after they began building it turned out to be about five feet,” Building Inspector Pete Scheuerman told the commissioners.

That’s because GTS decided to install sufficient equipment for planned future expansions of the new facility, Scheuerman added.

“It makes sense to put a big enough unit in there so when they do expand they don’t have to take it up and replace it,” Mayor Donald Pohlman commented.

Company officials had contacted him to explain the situation and ask how the city wanted to address the issue, Scheuerman said.

“They felt it was sufficient enough that they felt they should get some direction. They’re willing to do anything we ask,” he explained.

Options offered included painting the machinery to match the building’s walls or building the wall taller to cover more of the machinery.

The planners voted for the latter option.

They also approved a request from Pleasant View Townhomes to build a 20-by-20-foot utility building on the property.

Brent Schumacher of Commonweatlh Development explained that the building would be used to store lawn and snow removal equipment for the complex.

Because the townhouses were approved as a planned unit development, any change to the original plan required Plan Commission approval.
