The Land O’ Lakes Baseball League game was both teams’ regular-season finale. Plymouth finished 8-10 and fourth place in the Northern Division and dropped to 14-14 overall. The Saints placed third in the division with an 11-7 record.

The Flames host Thiensville- Mequon in the first round of the division tournament Saturday at 1 p.m. Plymouth is a No. 4 seed and the Twins, No. 5. The Flames are seeded higher than the Twins due to a head-to-head tiebreaker.

The Plymouth/Thiensville- Mequon winner will advance to the semifinals Sunday.

Plymouth outhit the Saints 11-9 but left nine runners on base, including six in scoring position, and committed two errors which led to two unearned runs.

The Saints scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning which proved to be the difference in the outcome as they built a 5-1 lead. Mike Sherrick led off and reached base on an infield error. Ryan Modder followed with an RBI double. Modder later scored on Steve Dickmann’s groundout.

The Flames tied the score, 1-1, in the bottom of the first on a fielder’s choice by Dusty Medved which brought home Dave Stecker. Stecker had led off with a single and stolen second.

Plymouth tallied twice in the ninth to make it a 5-3 game. Joel Fabian led off with a walk and scored on Butch Cain’s ensuing double. Cain came home on Stecker’s groundout after moving to third on Matt Rhude’s base hit.

Saukville center fielder Cole Granrath robbed Jake Klemme of extra bases in the ninth when he made an outstanding, over-theshoulder catch for the second out with Rhude on second. The next batter struck out which ended the game.

Ryan Wachter, Fabian and Cain led the Flames in hits with two each.

Granrath paced the Saints’ bats with three hits and Kyle Dieringer had two. Saukville drew seven walks, led by Dieringer’s three.

Sherrick was the winning pitcher. He allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with seven strikeouts and only one walk in eight innings. Dieringer retired the fi- nal three batters in the ninth to earn a save.

Rhude made his starting debut on the mound for the Flames. Rhude, a 2013 Plymouth High School graduate and a standout pitcher this past season for the Panthers, took the loss. He surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits with six walks and five strikeouts in seven innings.

“Matt did a nice job. He threw hard and had good composure. He has a good set [of pitches],” said Flame player-manager Rick Meyer.

“We struggled a bit with Sherrick who has a good curveball. We were not able to string together hits and we couldn’t get the big hits.”

Stecker threw the final two frames and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits with one walk and a strikeout.

Meyer hopes his offense can pick it up in the division tourney.

“We can pretty much play with anyone [in the division]. We just have to score more runs and we have to get clutch hits,” he said.
