ZACH FRITZ P Howards Grove Sophomore ZACH FRITZ P Howards Grove Sophomore Sophomore pitcher Zach Fritz and junior center fielder Austin Edge of Howards Grove and senior first baseman AJ Klemme, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, were voted to the 2013 All- Central Lakeshore baseball team by the CLC coaches.

Fritz is one of six players who are unanimous firstteam picks. The Howards Tigers’ other all-conference players are senior catcher Derek Gabsch and senior first baseman Jordan Wittman who are both honorable mention.

Klemme has two Resorter teammates who earned All-CLC honors. Senior outfielder Tyler Jones was named to the second unit and junior infielder Danny Schneider made honorable mention.

Fritz had an impressive CLC season on the mound. He finished 4-0 with a 2.01 ERA and one save. Fritz also batted .362 with nine RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 17 attempts.

“He [Fritz] had a 1.93 ERA overall and defeated the top teams [in the CLC] Cedar Grove-Belgium and Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

AUSTIN EDGE OF Howards Grove Junior AUSTIN EDGE OF Howards Grove Junior Cedar Grove and Lutheran are the CLC co-champions.

“He picked off 19 guys overall. To be honest, that stat is unheard of because its two guys in every [pitching] appearance. I haven’t seen anything like it in my 19 years as a coach. When the opposing coach doesn’t allow his runners to lead off, its the ultimate compliment,” Weber said.

Weber said the main keys to Fritz’s strong pitching were control, location and changing speeds.

“Any pitcher that can do these things will be very successful. He has a location fastball, a moving fastball, changeup and a curveball,” said the coach.

“Also, Zach hit .362 and made numerous saving catches in center field on defense.”

AJ KLEMME 1B Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Senior AJ KLEMME 1B Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Senior Edge hit an outstanding .393 in league play with 15 RBIs, five doubles and 19 runs scored. He also swiped 21 bases out of 22 tries and had an excellent .533 on-base percentage.

“Austin was our leading hitter at .393 and also pitched against the top-division [CLC] teams, recording 4-2 record at 4.72 ERA,” said Weber.

“He led the team in doubles, RBIs and stolen bases [in CLC action] His (QAB) quality at-bats was tops as well at .507. He also dominated in center field when not pitching and caught the eye of all CLC coaches.

“These two guys [Edge and Fritz] were at the top of our lineup for a reason and that is that they know how to score. If they get on base, we’ll find a way to get them home. They put pressure on defenses,” said the coach.

Klemme batted .327 with nine RBIs, 12 runs, three doubles and an on-base percentage of .477 in league play. He was 5-for-5 stealing and committed only three errors in 18 league games for a .980 fielding average.

Jones was a .347 hitter with five RBIs, nine runs, four doubles and a .418 on-base average. He stole five bases in five attempts.

Schneider hit .308 and had 11 RBIs, two doubles, five triples, one home run, 13 runs scored and a .400 on-base average. He was 7-for-7 stealing.

Gabsch had four doubles, 10 RBIs, six runs and a .235 batting average.
