Cedarburg Mercs advance to LOL grand championship playoffs

CEDARBURG – The Cedarburg Mercs advanced to the Land O’ Lakes Baseball League grand championship playoffs with a 9-1 rout over the Grafton Express in the Northern Division tournament finals here Saturday afternoon.

Cedarburg, the division regular-season champion, finished second in last year’s _ grand championship playoffs.

After spotting the Express a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Mercs reeled off nine straight runs. Cedarburg grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third on RBI singles by Brandon Nedoma and Ross Zahour and an RBI double by John Vandenberg.

The Mercs broke the game open with three runs in the seventh, keyed by Nick Boehnlein’s two-run double.

Taylor Piel earned a complete-game victory.

Cedarburg pounded out 15 hits, led by Nedoma and Jake Wallock with three each. Grafton’s top batters were Mike Pruefer and Dustin Kesner with two hits apiece.

Grafton scored its run on back-to-back triples by Max Pruefer and Robbie Doring.

The Mercs will face Pewaukee from the Western Division in the first round of the playoffs Saturday at Cedarburg’s Behling Field at 1:30 p.m. In round two, the Mercs will play the Southwestern Division’s Burlington Sunday at Beaumont Field in Burlington at 1:30 p.m.
