Richard “Rick” Hovde, 61, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, surrounded by his family on Friday, July 26, 2013, at Sheboygan Aurora Memorial Medical Center, following a courageous battle with cancer.

I was born June 29, 1952, to Dorothy (Bayer) Hovde and the late Leland M. Hovde in Chicago, Ill. Our family moved to Green Bay, Wis., in October of 1960 when my dad transferred from Chicago with the A.C. Nielsen Co. I attended St. John the Evangelist Grade School in Green Bay and graduated from Green Bay East High School in 1970.

On Aug. 31, 1974, I was united in marriage to Mary L. Howlett. Together we raised our four children, Michelle, Elisabeth, Steven and Kristin.

On Feb. 2, 2002, Mary Ellen Schmidley and I were married at Fort Snelling Chapel in St. Paul, Minn.

In 2003, Mary Ellen and I moved from Green Bay to Sheboygan Falls after I began working for Johnsonville Sausage. I held many positions with Johnsonville beginning with computer operator and ending with the position of SAP Security and Change administrator.

I was a member of Southside Alliance Church where I served terms as a deacon and an usher. I was also a force in starting men’s retreats at Southside.

I was an avid Badger, Brewer and Packer fan. I attended the Ice Bowl with my dad and went to the Packer playoffs in Green Bay 30 years later with my son, Steve. I was a member of the Sheboygan Rifle & Pistol Club where I enjoyed target shooting. I also bowled like my father and grandfather before him and bowled for over 15 years on the same team in Green Bay. I especially looked forward to my Monday night card games during the winter months with my good friends from church and spending time with family and friends.

I am survived by my wife, Mary Ellen Schmidley; my children: Michelle (Paul) Babcock, Denmark, Wis.; Elisabeth Hovde, Milwaukee, Wis., Steven (Jessica) Hovde, Green Bay; and Kristin (Jeff) Flary, Gurney, Ill. I am further survived by seven grandchildren: Mickalyn and Collin Babcock, Dominick and Alexys Hovde, Charles, Maxwell and Adeline Flary. I am also survived by my mother, Dorothy

Hovde, Green Bay; my two brothers, Robert (Cindy), Miami, Fla., and Randall (Leigh Ann), Green Bay; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to my father, I was preceded in death by a sister and brother, Linda Hovde Pohlman and Ronald Marc Hovde, and an infant brother and sister, Raymond Gene and Diane Terese Hovde.

Funeral services for Richard L. Hovde were held Thursday afternoon, Aug. 1, at Southside Alliance Church, 4321 County Road A, Sheboygan, WI 53081. John Teschan, senior pastor, officiated. Entombment took place in Allouez Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum in Green Bay.

“For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” – Phillipians 1:21

Memorial funds have been established in my name for the March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.

The Olson Funeral Home and Cremation Service has been entrusted with Richard’s arrangements.

I would especially like to thank my loving wife, Mary Ellen, for her constant care and support. Others that deserve thanks are my son Steve for his willingness to move me via the Hoyer lift and to clean me up, Drs. Offerman and Kumar and all the nurses and technicians at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Sheboygan.
