Time to enjoy the County Fair once again

IT’S THAT TIME OF year again. Actually, it’s a lot of that times of the year again.

It’s end-of-summer time, almost back-to-school time, football kickoff time, last vacation time and more.

But around here, the most important time is County Fair time.

The annual event starts Thursday on the fairgrounds right here in Plymouth and runs through Labor Day weekend, wrapping up on the final holiday of summer.

That’s five days of fun, food, music, dancing, games, rides, enjoyment and fun - all right here in our backyard.

For more than a century, the County Fair has been the highlight of the year for exhibitors and visitors alike - and this year should be no different.

Part of what makes each fair so memorable and so successful is the dedication of an army of volunteers and paid staff who ensure that everything goes off without a hitch - or get things back on track quickly and seamlessly on those rare occasions when there is a hitch, other than the ones on the teams of horses.

For the past several decades-plus, that effort has been directed by Lois Roehl in her job as fair secretary.

Lois, as she has been known to everyone involved in the fair, has been the epitome of tireless dedication over those years.

She put in countless hours above and beyond the call of duty year after year, especially during the hectic weeks leading up to the fair and during the run of the fair itself. Indeed, there were times when it seemed like Lois literally lived on the fairgrounds in late August and early September.

The result, year in and year out, a county fair that ranked among the best in the state, for value, for entertainment, for participation and for fun.

It was accomplished through Lois’ leadership and direction backed by a cadre of dedicated and caring workers and volunteers.

With the example Lois has set and the operational framework she leaves behind, the continued success of the Sheboygan County Fair should be easily sustained by new Fair Secretary Janeen Cain and her staff.

There is always plenty to see and do at the Sheboygan County Fair and it can all fit in anybody’s budget, big or small.

Continuing roadwork on State 23 north of Plymouth may make getting to the fair a bit more of a challenge, but it really shouldn’t be too much of a hardship and the rewards - whether it’s viewing the animals and the eager youngsters showcasing their efforts; the many educational, craft and horticultural exhibits from your friends and neighbors; or the music, games, food and fun available all across the fairgrounds - will be more than worth it.

Come on out and enjoy the 2013 Sheboygan County Fair!
