HOWARDS GROVE – Bolstered by good senior leadership, depth and talent, the Howards Grove Tigers will be looking to have another successful boys soccer season.

The Tigers, who shared the Central Lakeshore Conference title last year with Oostburg at 11-1 and won their third straight Division 3 regional crown, return five starters among 18 letter winners. Heading the group of returning starters is sophomore forward Derrick Grimm who earned All-CLC first-team honors as a freshman. Grimm was the Tigers’ second-leading goal scorer in 2012 with 27 to go along with nine assists.

The other starters back are senior goalkeeper C.J. Berg, senior midfielder Jordan Fischer and senior defenders Andrew Gardner and Zach Berglund. Fischer was named to the All-CLC second team and Gardner was honorable mention last season.

“I think we’ll fare pretty good in the CLC. I am optimistic because of our senior leadership and the athleticism,” said sixth-year Tiger head coach Todd Fischer.

“The boys have a good understanding of the game and are very coachable.”

Fischer likes the team’s depth and talent.

“We have a number of talented boys that play all the positions. We are deep at all positions. With 28 players, we hope that as we sub we won’t lose strength,” said the coach.

Coach Fischer expects his senior group of seven players to provide the leadership.

He has been impressed with the freshman crop.

“We have eight incoming freshmen. They all add value to our team,” said the coach.

Coach Fischer sized up the conference competition.

“I think the CLC will be tough as it normally is. The top teams are Sheboygan Christian/Lutheran and Oostburg. And we cannot underestimate what Kohler brings,” he said.

“Our No. 1 goal is to win conference.”

The coach said the keys for the Tigers to have success include playing as a team, communicating, possessing the ball and finishing shots.
