Experience gives Panthers high hopes

PLYMOUTH – A very experienced Plymouth girls tennis squad has high hopes for the 2013 campaign.

The Panthers have seven returning letter winners, including two Division 2 state qualifiers, from last year’s team which finished second in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference and was third in its Division 1 subsectional meet. PHS had a 7-2 EWC dual record and was 13-6 overall.

“I am very optimistic about this season. We have a very experienced roster with eight seniors playing,” said new Panther head coach Jason Jaeckels who was previously the program’s junior varsity coach.

The Panthers’ returning state competitors are seniors Elizabeth Raeder and Beth Brisson. Raeder, the Panthers’ No. 1 singles player, was a state qualifier in singles last season when she finished 17-8 overall and was 8-1 in EWC action at the No. 1 spot. Brisson teamed up with Sophia Kiela (a senior last year) in 2012 and advanced to state – going 17-8 overall and 8-1 in EWC play.

Plymouth’s returning letter winners are Raeder, Brisson, seniors Chloe Kastelic, Elle Klecka and Shyenne Genette, junior Paige Stoney and sophomore Elizabeth Bolland. Klecka and Kastelic placed third in the sectional meet last season at No. 2 doubles which led PHS.

PHS has six players returning who earned All-EWC honors last year, all on the second team: Raeder at No. 1 singles; Brisson at No. 1 doubles with Kiela; Klecka and Kastelic, No. 2 doubles; and Stoney and Bolland at No. 3 doubles.

“Our strengths will be in our top of the lineup with Elizabeth Raeder at No. 1 singles, and Beth Brisson and Elle Klecka at No. 1 doubles. I look for them to make a run at a state appearance,” Jaeckels said.

He expects Raeder and Brisson, the Panthers’ team captains, to provide solid leadership.

The coach said the team’s major weakness is that Raeder is the only player who is playing at the same position as last year.

Jaeckels said that because the lower flights are new to varsity competition, he’s not entirely sure what to expect from them. The varsity newcomers who have impressed Jaeckels the most are seniors Sierra McNeil, Hannah Anhalt and Becca Franzen.

Improvement from the lower, inexperienced flights is the main key for the team to have success, according to the coach.

Jaeckels predicts that PHS, Kohler and Manitowoc Roncalli will challenge for the league title. Roncalli is the defending champion and Kohler finished third.

His top goals are to win the EWC championship and qualify two flights for the state tournament. PLYMOUTH GIRLS TENNIS ROSTER
