Huffman captures remarkable moment

GRACE HUFFMAN GRACE HUFFMAN That one special picture will often happen by accident or by persistence. No matter how it happens, Grace Huffman, age 10, has managed to capture a nest of baby robins with eggs and that photo has won her a merit award at the Sheboygan County Fair.

Huffman is a member of the Clover Crusader 4-H Club and is the daughter of Colin and Michelle. She has been in photography for two years and this is her first merit award.

“This Robin’s nest was on the post of the fence on our patio,” said Huffman. “So I stood on a stepladder and held the camera above the nest to take pictures.”

“I just kept shooting and I didn’t use a zoom,” said Huffman. “I just held the camera up and took pictures. I used my camera that is a Nikon Coolpix.”

“The post is about four or five feet tall,” said Huffman, “and I just held up the camera and I wasn’t sure what I was getting. This is the first time I did it this way.”

What Huffman captured is remarkable. The nest grass is very well defined in the picture and inside the nest are two robins. One robin appears to be sleeping while the second one looks a bit hungry and is hoping for a treat. Next to the baby birds are two blue speckled eggs not yet hatched.

“I took a ton of pictures to be sure to get one good one,” said Huffman, “but I did get quite a few good ones but this was the best.”

“Because I did get a lot of good ones I wasn’t surprised that I got one that was really good,” said Huffman.

Huffman mounted the 8 by 10 colored photo on a black mat. The black accents the birds and makes them appear 3 dimensional.

“I like photography,” said Huffman. “its fun taking pictures and choosing the best one.”

“The judge really liked it,” said Huffman. “She had no specific comments except keep doing pictures.”

“I like taking pictures of birds,” said Huffman. “Last year I took a picture of Killdeer eggs.”
