Tigers place third in Mukwonago Invite

MUKWONAGO – The Howards Grove Tigers continued their strong start this season with a third-place finish in a very competitive Mukwonago Invitational girls volleyball tournament Saturday.

The Tigers defeated Kenosha Bradford in the third-place match, 25-19, 26-24. In the semifinals, Howards lost to Mukwonago, 17-25, 17-25.

The top-two teams in Pool A and Pool B advanced to the semifinals. Menomonee Falls won Pool A with a 3-0 record and Howards was second at 2-1. Mukwonago was the Pool B winner at 3-0 and Bradford took second with a 2-1 mark.

Menomonee Falls won the tourney with a 25-21, 25-18 win over Mukwonago in the championship match.

“Our [coaching] staff is very proud of our team and how we played against toprated Division 1 competition. We look forward to this tournament every year,” said Tiger head coach Brett Damrow.

In pool play, the Tigers beat Oconomowoc (25-22, 13-25, 15-9) and Waukesha North (25-6, 25-12) and lost to Menomonee Falls (10-25, 19-25).

Ali Schueler led the Tigers in kills for the tourney with 48, followed by Courtney Milz with 15, Autumn Risch, 13 and and Erin Valenstein, 12. Risch had a team-high 80 assists.

Schueler paced Howards in digs with 47. Valerie Free had 35 and Risch contributed 25. Free led in ace serves with eight, followed by Risch with seven and Schueler, six. Valenstein led in blocks with two.

Howards, 8-2 in match play this season, won the Sheboygan South Invitational in its debut on Aug. 29.
