Tiger coach upbeat about experienced teams

HOWARDS GROVE – Head coach Gary Kalk is excited about the Howards Grove Tigers’ 2013 boys and girls cross country season.

Both squads have good experience – the girls with seven returning letter winners and the boys, six. The girls have a fairly deep team with 11 team members, including a promising freshman group.

“From top to bottom, this is a talented group of runners [in the program],” said Kalk who’s in his 16th season at Howards.

“With 13 returning runners, the nucleus of my team has experience competing in a full cross country season. That will prove beneficial as the season moves along.”

Heading list of returning letter winners for the boys team is junior Eric Dvorachek who finished 11th in the 2012 Central Lakeshore Conference Meet which led the Tigers. Dvorachek is off to a strong start this season.

Leading the Tiger girls are senior Emily Eschen and freshman Ashley Reinemann who are also per- forming well at the outset. Eschen is the team’s top returning runner from the CLC Meet, having placed 12th.

“Emily Eschen and Eric Dvorachek will provide leadership while contending for all-conference recognition. Although we’re still in the very early phase of our season, thus far the team looks to be in fairly good shape,” Kalk said.

“The potential exists for the girls team to be highly successful. The addition of four freshman ladies have bolstered an already solid team from a year ago.

“A runner to watch is Ashley Reinemann. She’s got a ton of ability and will hang with the lead pack of runners.

“The Tiger boys return numbers and experience. They may surprise some people this season,” said Kalk.

“As is always the case, my team’s health will play a major factor in how well we perform individually and as a team. If we remain healthy, we will be very competitive.”

Kalk sees Sheboygan Lutheran and Cedar Grove-Belgium as the CLC title favorites in boys and girls competition, respectively. Lutheran was second to Oostburg last year. Cedar Grove is the defending champion. The Tigers finished fourth in the boys and girls league meets.
