Tigers play well in tough Fondy Invite

FOND DU LAC – Despite going 0-2, the Howards Grove Tigers played well in Saturday’s Fond du Lac Invitational boys soccer tournament.

The Tigers lost to eventual champion Kettle Moraine Lutheran (Jackson) in round one, 4-3. Howards receive a bye in round two and then lost to a strong Fond du Lac team, 4-0, in round three.

Griffin Hoerchner scored the winning goal for the Lutheran Chargers against Howards on a penalty kick with only three minutes left which snapped a 3-3 tie. The tourney matches included 35-minute halves instead of the usual 40.

Senior midfielder Jordan Fischer’s goal with five minutes remaining had pulled the Tigers even at 3-3. Derrick Grimm had the assist.

Scoring one goal each for Howards were Grimm and Andrew Gardner in the first half. Grimm assisted on Gardner’s goal.

“Our guys played one of the best games of the season [against Lutheran]. We went toe to toe with a team who plays very similar to us,” said Tiger head coach Todd Fischer whose team is 6-4.

“It’s unfortunate, a penalty kick decides the game in the last three minutes when both teams played their hearts out. I am very proud of our guys.”

Tiger senior goalkeeper C.J. Berg made eight saves and Lutheran goalie Scott Jeske had two. The Chargers led 11-5 in shots on goal.

The Chargers posted a 3-0 record in the seven-team tournament. Marshfield placed second with a 2-1 mark.

The Tigers hung tough against Fond du Lac which didn’t pull away until the second half when it scored three goals.

“The guys came out and didn’t allow a goal until the last few minutes in the first half. Our bench played awesome,” said coach Fischer.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the efforts our boys put forth against a good Division 1 opponent. We came away from the tournament with just a couple of injuries but are ready to give our conference opponents a run for their money.”

The Cardinals held a 15-5 advantage in shots on goal. Tiger goalie Hunter Voss made 11 saves.
