Schools, Pig feature Harvest of the Month

Thanks to a community partnership, the Plymouth School District and Plymouth Piggly Wiggly are joining forces to promote the Harvest of the Month.

The Harvest of the Month initiative was started during the 2011-12 school year by registered dietitian Jessica Mella, district nutrition and wellness coordinator. Students are introduced to a fruit and vegetable each month, usually with an opportunity to sample the produce.

In addition, food service director Toni DeStefano has added Harvest of the Month produce to the school lunch menu. She also is working on getting local produce this year and is developing recipes to use fresh produce throughout the year. The Harvest of the Month also is featured during Fruity Friday at the Plymouth Youth Center and during Little Learners “Taste and Learn” sessions.

Beginning in September, Mella will be in the produce department of the Plymouth Piggly Wiggly from 3 to 5 p.m. the third Tuesday of the month to promote the Harvest of the Month and to assist shoppers with any questions related to food.

Harvest of the Month recipes are included in the monthly newsletter of the district parent nutrition group Area Plymouth Parents for Living Well with Education (APPLE). Mella also has created recipe sheets featuring the Harvest of the Month, which will be available in the Online Friday Folders and at Piggly Wiggly, as well as an aisle-by-aisle guide to healthy snacks.
