PHS competes well at strong GB Southwest Invite

GREEN BAY – Their finishes don’t reflect how well the Plymouth Panthers boys and girls cross country teams competed in Thursday’s Green Bay Southwest Invitational.

The invitational included several strong teams, including three in each meet who are ranked in the top 15 in the state in Division 1. PHS placed seventh in the boys competition and ninth in the girls meet with 214 and 190, respectively. Both meets had 12-team fields.

“Both teams ran against some real tough teams Given this level of competition, we faired quite well,” said Panther head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

Kimberly dominated the boys meet with 35 points to capture first. The Papermakers’ first-five runners finished in the top nine overall. Neenah was the runner-up with 74. Freshman Tannor Wagner of Ashwaubenon won the race with a time of 16 minutes, 16.06 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

Senior Tom Jankowski paced the PHS boys with an 18th-place effort in 17:18.29.

Kimberly also won the girls title, outscoring runner-up Neenah, 70-82. Sophomore Lauren Farina of Appleton North was the champion with a 15:09.05 clocking over 2.5 miles. The Panthers’ top finisher was junior Julia Novotny who took 12th in 16:05.17.

“We had a nice effort from both varsity and junior varsity runners. Tom had a strong finish to lead us [in the boys race] and we had a great pack of our next three, with Ian [McConnaha, Chandler [Haun] and Paul [Francis] within 12 seconds,” said Grosshuech.

“Our boys are working hard each week and we are excited to see it pay off with our team’s improvement.

“The girls had a great meet. We had three girls under 16:40. Julia continues to run well each week and we got some real strong support from Brooke [Koehn] and Abby [Payne].”
