Howards Grove to offer supplemental insurance, savings plans to village employees

by Steve Ottman Review Correspondent

HOWARDS GROVE—The village will offer voluntary accidental insurance options to village employees at no cost to the village.

Personnel Committee Chairman Jeff Plass made a recommendation to authorize Clerk-Treasurer Lavonne Athorp to select a vendor for the supplemental insurance. There are two options for vendors, Transamerica and Aflac. Transamerica has better premiums, however it is not as well known as Aflac.

These plans will be available to any employee, not just full-time employees, including any elected officials who are interested. Following discussion, the board authorized Athorp to offer a voluntary accidental insurance plan.

The board adopted a resolution to offer employees the state of Wisconsin Deferred Compensation Program and another designating an agent for the program.

Plass reviewed the committee’s recommendation to authorize participation in the WDC program. He explained it is a voluntary retirement savings option for village employees, at no cost to the village. This will be available to any employee, and appointed or elected officials, not just full-time employees, who are interested.

Village President James Scheiber reported that Trustee Dale Wuestenhagen has asked to resign as chair of the Safety Committee due to work commitments .

Scheiber recommended the appointment of Trustee Ed Pahl as the new chairman. Following brief discussion board members approved the appointment with Pahl abstaining.

The board did not go into closed session per the agenda for possible building code violations. Athorp reported that after further review and consultation with other building inspectors, the village’s building inspector determined that his interpretation of the code was more conservative than the other inspectors.

He was comfortable approving the final occupancy for 428 Millersville Ave. without any changes being necessary.

It was noted that this finalized the outstanding occupancy permit for the Pekarske subdivision and, following the decision at the Sept. 3 board meeting, no further permits would be issued in the subdivision until the roadway has been completed.
