Tiger girls win Valders Invite

VALDERS – An impressive team effort carried the Howards Grove Tigers to the Valders Invitational girls cross country Division II title for the fourth straight year Thursday afternoon.

The Tigers placed its first five runners in the top 11 overall, led by freshman Ashley Reinemann who took first in 17 minutes, 47 seconds on the tough 2.5-mile course.

Howards scored 28 points and Hilbert was second with 49. The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters finished fifth (122) in the meet which included eight schools (five had complete teams). Elkhart was paced by Jessica Mehre who placed 16th in 20:00.

Oostburg won the boys meet with an outstanding 31 points and the Tigers were second at 93. Elkhart finished sixth with 119 in the seven-team field.

Tiger junior Eric Dvorachek earned third with a time of 18:17 over 3.1 miles. The winner was Oostburg’s Adam Daane in 17:50. Elkhart’s top runner was Jordan Kissinger who placed sixth in 19:21.

“This course always proves to be a challenging one. Our race times are typically much higher here than anywhere else we run,” said Tiger head coach Gary Kalk.

“Yet, my team [boys and girls] was up for today’s challenge. I really like the toughness that’s developing in my team. Their competitive spirits are starting to rise during our recent run of team success.”
