Panthers win Port Washington Invitational

PORT WASHINGTON – The Plymouth Panthers won the Port Washington Invitational girls volleyball tournament Sept. 28 with a 25-27, 25-19, 15-7 win over Port Washington in the championship match.

Panther head coach Peg Huhn was very pleased with how her team responded after losing a close game one.

“It was a great championship match. We really stayed consistent despite some ups and downs, and stayed in control after a very close first set [game],” said Huhn.

“We had been ahead by five all game [in game one] until the end and let it slip through. But, we stayed composed and really took control the last two sets.

“It feels good to finally go to a tournament and have a team that wants to take first place and expects to take first place,” said Huhn.

Nikki Reil and Kaily Moegenburg spearheaded the Panthers’ attack in the match with 12 and 10 kills, respectfully. Moegenburg and Sophie Gentine led in solo blocks with two each. Mary Albert had a teamhigh 29 assists.

Moegenburg paced PHS in digs with 24, followed by Alyssa Uribe and Mackenzie Haese with 16 each. Uribe and Moegenburg led in serve reception with 9-for-9 and 7-for-7, respectfully.

Plymouth’s top servers were Albert with 8 of 8 and Moegenburg, 6 of 6.
