Gibraltar rocks Resorters with second-half explosion

GIBRALTAR – A 46-point explosion in the second half sparked Gibraltar to a 62-26 rout over the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters in a crucial Great 8 Conference North Division football game here Friday night.

The loss eliminated the Resorters from the divisional championship race as they dropped to 3-2 (6-2 overall). The Vikings improved to 5-0 in the division (8-0 overall) and remained tied for first with Green Bay Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran.

All three teams have one division game left. Gibraltar plays at NEW Lutheran Saturday in a showdown for the championship.

Elkhart led 20-16 at halftime before the roof caved in. Quarterback Nick Kita ignited the Vikings’ offense in the second half with three touchdown passes and a scoring run. Kita threw for 300 yards and five TDs on the night.

Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann said his defense wasn’t able to put pressure on Kita in the second half which Feldmann thought was a factor in Kita’s passing success.

“Their quarterback threw the ball pretty well. They just played better than we did in the second half,” said Feldmann.

“We played well on offense in the first half. They made adjustments on defense and got more pressure on our quarterback [Elliot Van Oss] in the second half. Their defense did a better job against the run in the second half.”

The Resorters gained only 60 yards passing and were outgained in total offense, 441-247.

Van Oss had a TD pass and ran for two scores. Freshman running back Jared Shaw led Elkhart in rushing with 77 yards on 18 attempts.

Resorter defensive tackle Jordan Puchalla had a fumble recovery.

“We played hard. We fought to the end,” said Feldmann.

“Jared had a good game running the ball. AJ Lallensack [tight end] had a good night catching the ball.”

Lallensack caught a 23-yard TD pass.

“I’m confident the kids will bounce back,” Feldmann said.

The Resorters host Oneida Nation in a divisional game Friday night to close out the regular season.
