Klemme powers Tigers to first win

HOWARDS GROVE – Senior running back Tyler Klemme rushed for 122 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Howards Grove Tigers to their first football win of the season, 28-19, over Sheboygan Lutheran/ Kohler/Sheboygan Christian here Friday night.

“It was a tremendous effort from the whole team, believing we could win. We were depleted by injuries, and a number of players stepped up,” said Tiger head coach David Schmid.

The Central Lakeshore Conference game was both teams’ season finale. The Tigers finished 1-4 in the CLC and 1-8 overall. The Crusaders were 0-5 in the league and 1-8 overall.

Quarterback Austin Edge’s 44-yard TD pass to wide receiver Ethan Brinkman broke a 19-19 tie with 1:28 left in the third quarter. Brinkman added the PAT which gave Howards a 26- 19 lead.

The Tigers made it 28-19 and a two-possession game when junior defensive lineman Jonah Gerber scored a safety with 8:41 remaining.

“Starting for the first time at center, Zach Mock [junior] didn’t miss a snap and did a terrific job blocking,” said Schmid. “On the defensive side of the ball, Andrew Reinemann [junior defensive back] had three interceptions.

“Our seniors played their hearts out to get our team the win. Austin Edge, Tyler Klemme, Daniel Cotet and Jordan Siemers [all seniors] willed us this victory. A great way to end the season.”

The Tigers rushed for a season-high 231 yards. Edge contributed 65 on 19 carries.

Junior running back Caleb Kelly ran for 179 yards on 21 attempts, including a 23-yard TD run, for the Crusaders.
