Betty Ann Zimmermann, 84, of rural Elkhart Lake, died unexpectedly at her home Friday evening, Oct. 25, 2013.

She is the former Betty Ann Athorp, born April 22, 1929 in the town of Mosel, daughter of the late Arthur and Meta (Gosse) Athorp. Betty Ann attended grade school in the town of Mosel and Howards Grove High School.

On Nov. 6, 1948, she married Marvin E. Zimmermann at St. Paul UCC in the town of Mosel. She and her husband farmed in the town of Rhine and had the great honor of owning the farm when it became a Century Farm. She and Marvin were involved with Sheboygan County Farm Bureau and the Hilltop Farmers 4-H, where she served as both a general leader and was a foods and nutrition leader. She and Marvin also enjoyed taking bus trips and playing cards. Marvin preceded her in death Jan. 21, 1987.

Betty Ann was very active at Elkhart Lake schools while her children were attending. She served as room mother and was the volunteer school nurse. She also was active with the PTA and was very involved with the PTA and AFS Fair.

She was a member of Bethel UCC and served with the Ladies Aid.

She also worked at the Plymouth Hospital as a cook and baker from 1986 until her retirement.

In her free time she enjoyed sewing, tending to her flowers and gardening. She especially enjoyed reading and playing cards. She belonged to several card clubs, one for over 60 years.

Survivors include her two children, Mark (Judy) Zimmermann of rural Elkhart Lake and Mary (Bill) Johnston of Elkhart Lake; and four grandchildren: Bonnie (Dean) Ziegler, Howards Grove; Jeff (Jill) Zimmermann, rural Elkhart Lake; Brenda Lee Johnston (Randy Talley), Hartford, and Brian Johnston, Green Bay. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Collin, Peyton and Brennan Zimmermann and Hannah and Julia Ziegler; one brother, Gerald Athorp (Beverly Smith); one nephew, Lloyd Athorp; an aunt, Lorena Gosse; along with other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Meta (Gosse) Athorp; her husband, Marvin; sister-in-law, Verna Athorp; niece, Beverly Athorp; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Alvin and Norma (Voss) Zimmermann.

Funeral services for Betty Ann will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Bethel UCC (W4225 County Line Road, Elkhart Lake) with the Rev. Jim Liddle and the Rev. Rebecca Johnston officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Family and friends may call at the church Wednesday from 3 p.m. until 5:45 p.m. when we will have brief family rites.

A memorial has been established in her name for Bethel UCC.
