Salute to veterans

Veterans Day programs planned at area schools, churches, nursing homes

What began as the remembrance of the armistice that ended World War I will be marked again Sunday as Veterans’ Day.

Observances are scheduled at schools, churches and other facilities to honor men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.

The Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah School District will hold a Veterans Day program Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. in the high school gymnasium.

The High School band and chorus will perform selections for this event, which will also include speeches and poetry readings from high school students.

Guest speaker for the program is Bill Ray, a retired U.S. Army major. Ray joined the 101st Airborne Division as an airborne Ranger infantryman in 1959. He finished his military career with the 101st in late August, 2013, at Bagram, Afghanistan, managing all counterintelligence investigations and operations in Regional Command-East.

The school district would like to invite the community to attend and share in this event of honoring all who have served or are currently serving.

The day will be marked at several Plymouth schools Monday.

Members of the World’s Cheese Center Veterans of Foreign War Post 5612 will conduct ceremonies in the Acuity Auditorium at Plymouth High School at 9:15 a.m. Monday.

The program will feature the PHS band and chorus and a short oral presentation by the Advanced Speech class. Two VFW veterans will be recognized.

The Ladewig-Zinkgraf American Legion Post 243 will hold a ceremony at Riverview Middle School at 10:30 a.m., followed by an assembly at Parkview Elementary School at 11:15 a.m. Both ceremonies will include the playing of Taps and a rifle volley by the post’s ceremonial unit, as well as a flag raising ceremony at Parkview.

Family members and veterans are invited to join Parkview Elementary School for their program honoring veterans. Students are encouraged to wear red, white and blue for the program, which will be presented by the school’s fourth-graders.

The post will also conduct ceremonies at Rocky Knoll at 1:30 p.m. and Libby’s House at 2:30 p.m. honoring veteran residents of those facilities.

The public is invited to the annual Veterans Day observance at

St. John Lutheran Church, 222 N.

Stafford St., Sunday, Nov. 10, at the 10:30 a.m. service.
