Kewaunee cruises past Rockets in D-5 playoffs

CEDAR GROVE – Key injuries and turnovers hurt the Cedar Grove-Belgium Rockets as the Kewaunee Storm rolled to a 47- 12 win in the quarterfinals of the Division 5 state football playoffs here Friday night.

The Rockets, a No. 1 region seed, finished their season with a 10-2 record. Kewaunee, 11-1 and seeded No. 2, advances to the semifinals Friday against Lancaster (12- 0) at Brookfield Central at 7 p.m.

Caleb Johnson returned two interceptions for touchdowns, including a 99-yarder, which sparked a 27-0 run by the Storm which gave them a 34-6 lead in the third quarter. Caleb also threw two TD passes and ran for a score at the quarterback position.

Quarterback Drew Emperley and wide receiver Logan Peterson of Cedar Grove sustained injuries. Peterson, the Rockets’ top receiver this season, was injured in the first quarter and didn’t return. He caught one pass for 37 yards.

Emperley played most of the second half at a receiver spot because a shoulder injury prevent- ed him from throwing the ball. He finished the night with two completions for 62 yards.

The Rockets pulled to within 7-6 after running back Greg Wenzel’s 4-yard TD run in the first period.

Cedar Grove had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the second quarter after driving to the Kewaunee 1-yard line. However, Johnson picked off a pass and returned it 99 yards for a score which was a huge turning point as the Storm went ahead for good, 14-6.

The Rockets’ leading rusher was running back Aaron Chier with 84 yards on 16 carries. Peterson led in receiving yardage.

The Storm led 276-234 in total offensive yardage. The Rockets suffered four turnovers which all came on interceptions.
