Resorters striving to improve over last season

ELKHART LAKE – A young Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah girls basketball team had some growing pains last season but showed improvement and gained valuable experience which the Resorters hope will pay off during the 2013- 14 campaign.

The Resorters have a young overall program (varsity and junior varsity) again this season but the varsity has all five of its starters back among six returning letter winners. Heading the group of returnees is junior guard-forward Mariah Ausloos who earned All- Central Lakeshore Conference second-team honors as a sophomore.

“We are looking to improve and gain experience as the season moves on. We are a young team and program but we are up to the challenge,” said Resorter head coach Donny Kulow.

“I like the effort I have seen in practice and we have players that are coachable and are willing to learn and get better.”

The Resorters finished 3-13 in the CLC (eighth place) and 5-18 overall. They advanced to the Division 5 regional semifinals where they lost to Oneida Nation.

Ausloos led Elkhart in scoring last season with a 9.7 points-per-game average and rebounding at 7.2 per contest. She was second in steals with 70 (3.2 average).

“Mariah had a great summer playing ball and has improved her overall game,” said Kulow who is in his 21st season at the helm.

The other starters back are senior guard Ashley Pfeifer, sophomore guard Emily Holzmann, sophomore forward Rachael Flora and sophomore guardforward Emma Feldmann. Last season, Pfeifer paced the Resorters in steals with 83 (3.6 average per game) and assists, 52 (2.3 average). Pfeifer was an All-CLC honorable-mention pick as a junior.

Feldmann had a team-high 40 blocked shots (1.7 average).

The other returning letter winner is senior guard Kelly Theel.

“Ashley and Kelly are threeyear varsity players and we will need their leadership. We need all players to step up and challenge themselves to be better and contribute,” Kulow said.

Defense, rebounding and depth are concerns for Kulow.

“I like the team’s chemistry and effort. We do have some size and overall quickness,” said the veteran coach.

“We need to improve on our defense and we must rebound better than in the past. We do lack varsity experience and are looking for depth at all positions.”

Kulow said the team should have good balanced scoring but emphasized the need to find depth. Elkhart has only 15 players, (varsity and JV teams combined) in its program this season, including seven freshmen. All of the players are on the varsity roster but many of the underclassmen will also play on the JV squad.

“The freshman class is very athletic and all the girls’ work ethic and attitude have been great. They may help us with the depth we need,” said the coach.

Staying healthy and eligible are two of the keys for the Resorters to achieve success because of the low numbers in the program, said Kulow. He said the other keys are to bond as a team and work together.

Kulow gives defending champion Oostburg the favorite’s nod in the CLC title chase. The Lady Dutch, 16-0 in league play last season, return senior guard Maranda Huibregtse who was an All-CLC first-team player as a junior.

Oostburg, which reached the Division 4 sectional finals last season, have won or shared the league title the last four seasons.

“Howards Grove should battle near the top as well. The CLC teams have some quality players returning and it should be interesting this year,” Kulow said.

Howards placed second in the CLC last season with a 13-3 mark.

Kulow pointed out his top goals this season:

“Improve every practice and every game, challenge to finish in the top half of conference and play our best ball come tourney time.”
