Tigers’ attack fizzles in loss to Springs

HOWARDS GROVE – The visiting St. Mary’s Springs (Fond du Lac) Ledgers outscored Howards Grove 21-10 in the third quarter to key a 56-40 girls basketball win Monday night.

The nonconference loss dropped the Tigers’ record to 1-2. Springs hiked its mark to 4-0.

Springs led 22-15 at halftime and then opened up its advantage to 43-25 after three quarters. Senior forward Eleanore Mueller ignited the Ledgers’ attack in the third period with seven points.

Howards shot only 37 percent from the field, compared to Springs’ 49 percent. The Tigers were plagued by 25 turnovers.

Junior forward Kelli Schrauth of Springs scored _ _ a game-high 17 points and Mueller added 15. Schrauth was an impressive 8-for-9 from the field and Mueller an outstanding 7-for-9.

Junior guard Morgan Edge paced the Tigers’ offense with 11 points. Brittany Schaller had a team-high five steals and shared the lead in assists with Lyndsay Peterson at three each.

Olivia Stauss had three steals and a team-best four rebounds for Howards.

“They really limited what we did offensively. We only took 13 shots by halftime,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

Howards was outscored 14-4 in the first quarter. Schrauth erupted for eight points in the period to spark the Ledgers.
