John P. Anderson, age 78, of Plymouth, Wis., passed away early Wednesday evening, Dec. 11, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital due to complications of open heart surgery.

John was born Sept. 10, 1935 in Janesville, Wis., a son of the late Jerrold and Helen (Baird) Anderson. He graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in 1953 and attended University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

John served in the U.S. Army from 1956-58 serving in the Korean War.

On Nov. 7, 1959, he married Karen Tess at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Sturgeon Bay. The couple resided in Sturgeon Bay for six years and then moved to Plymouth in 1966.

He worked at Watry Industries for 30 years retiring in 2000 and in retirement worked at Piggly Wiggly for 12 years as the winter bag boy.

John was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth serving as an usher, was the past president of the Home & School Association and was a chairperson for the fall festival for many years.

He served as president of the Sturgeon Bay Jaycees and was an active member in the Plymouth Jaycees. John was one of the founders of the Plymouth Junior Football League and coached for many years.

He was a proud member of the Plymouth Lions club for 42 years and served on many of the boards within the club, including being chairman of the cheese stand for many years.

He served as an alderman for the 1st District in the city of Plymouth for six terms. John was the ambassador for the Quiet Woods South Camping Resort in Brussels, Wis.

John lived for his three grandsons and cherished watching them at all their school activities, especially their sporting events.

Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Karen of Plymouth; one son, Jeff Anderson of Maryland; two daughters, Patti Anderson of Kenosha and Amy (Mark) Albers of Plymouth; three cherished grandsons: Ben, Zach and Brady Albers; one sister, Mary Anderson of Sturgeon Bay; dear friend, Judy Neuman of Sturgeon Bay; three sisters-in-law: Jerri Anderson of Arizona, Pat (Lynne) Wolfgram of Sturgeon Bay and Alanna Tess of Michigan; special niece and godchild, Lori Jandrain of Algoma; and also survived by many nieces, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, David; father- and mother-inlaw, Elden and Dorothy Tess; one brotherin law, Tony Tess and one sister and brotherin law, Donna (Ed) Austad.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday afternoon, Dec. 16, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. The Rev. Dan Volkert, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

A memorial fund is being established in John’s name.

The Plymouth VFW World Cheese Center Post #5612 conducted military rites at the church following the services.
