Tigers roll past Resorters

ELKHART LAKE – The Howards Grove Tigers outscored Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 33-14 in the second half to key a 64-34 romp in a Central Lakeshore Conference boys basketball game here Tuesday night.

The Tigers, who broke a twogame losing streak, raised their CLC record to 3-2 (5-2 overall). The Resorters fell to 0-4 in the league (1-6 overall) and have lost five in a row.

Howards pulled away with a 15-4 scoring advantage in the third quarter which gave it a 46-24 lead. Austin Edge tallied seven points, including a three-point goal, to lead the Tigers in the period. The Tigers led 31-20 at halftime.

“Defense was the key to breaking it open in the second half. I thought we played good team defense and did a nice job controlling their leading scorer [this season in Antonio Bett],” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

Bett was held scoreless in the second half and finished the game with only five points.

“I was pleased with the way we attacked and shared the ball on offense. Defensively, we were able to pressure them into a number of turnovers which opened things up for us a little bit,” Worth said.

“The kids played great team basketball on the offensive and defensive end.”

The Tigers held Elkhart to only 32-percent shooting from the field. Howards outscored the Resorters 22-9 at the foul line.

Edge, a senior guard, led a balanced Tiger offense with 15 points, keyed by a 10-for-10 effort at the charity stripe. Sophomore guard Derrick Grimm contributed 10 points and a team-high eight steals off the bench.

Edge also paced his team in assists with four. Trent Beninghaus led Howards in rebounds with five.

Sophomore guard Stephan Clemens led Elkhart scorers with 11.
