Sara E. Staples, age 78, of 832 N. Sixth St. #205, Sheboygan, Wis., passed away after several months of rapidly declining health at St. Nicholas Hospital Hospice on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013.

She was born Nov. 10, 1935, to Robert F. and Sara M. Clark in Chetek, Wis. They moved to Madison, Wis., shortly after her birth and then on to Boulder, Colo., in 1945. Sara graduated from Boulder High School and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder.

She led an active and fast-paced life in her late teens and early 20s when she was a competitive barrel racer, raced stock cars in the Powder Puff Derby and was involved with several singing and community theater groups. From the mid-1960s to the late 1970s, Sara was a successful real estate agent in the Boulder area while raising her three children from two marriages to Alvin Fuqua and Harry Coulson.

On Aug. 10, 1979, she married Richard Staples who worked for Sargento Foods as a military sales representative. They moved to Elkhart Lake, Wis., in 1980 and resided there until his death in 1999.

During a good portion of her time in Elkhart Lake, Sara ran her own interior decorating service called Designs by Sara. She also managed the Silver Springs Resort and Conference Center south of Plymouth, Wis., in the early 1990s.

Sara was an avid golfer and was involved in numerous community groups and volunteer activities, including 14 years of delivering Meals on Wheels with her good friend Joan Wilke. Sara’s friendly demeanor and passion for enjoying life will be missed by all who knew her.

Sara was preceded in death by her late life companion, Robert Meyer of Sheboygan, in December 2005 and her stepdaughter, Cynthia Zillmer (Staples) of Foley, Minn., in May 2013.

She is survived by her daughter, Roberta Joy (Larry) Grahn of Farmington, Minn.; two sons, Michael C. (Jean) Coulson of Kohler, Wis., and Mark A. Coulson of Lewiston, Idaho; and two granddaughters, Hanna and Catherine Coulson of Kohler.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth. The Rev. Todd Smith, pastor of First United Lutheran Church, will officiate.

Friends may call at the Suchon Funeral Home from 1 p.m. Saturday until the time of the services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in her name for the Sheboygan County Meals on Wheels Program.
