More of the same?

To the Editor:

The last month certainly brought good news for my family! My sister (healthy and in her late 50’s) and my son (soon to be 26) both were able to sign up for affordable health care on the ACA website. It was easy once the decision was made on the plan that would be the best for each of them. I continue to be mystified on why this is a bad thing! What was so great about the old system that excluded people? The system that let private insurance companies write all the rules certainly did not work. (See Bill Moyers interview with Wendell Potter for an insurance insider’s viewpoint). I would have preferred a government run system, but private business won out with our current law.

So what is ahead for 2014? Listening to Republicans who call in to Cspan, it sounds like more of the same doom and gloom- no immigration reform, dire predictions for the ACA and prayers that it will fail, a goal of expanding the tax base (that means higher taxes for people who make under $100,000 folks!), no government stimulus on the infrastructure to create jobs, regressive tax reform (like higher sales tax that will hurt working families), more touting of lower taxes to the super wealthy and their third home in the Caribbean, more labeling of making Mitt Romney pay taxes as “redistribution of wealth”, when it should really be called “paying a fair share” for the services that are provided, more thinking that “trickle down” economics actually works (how is it working to create jobs in Wisconsin?) and no recognition of climate change or legislation to help get us off of our carbon fix.

I worry for our country when I hear the high number of people who have been brainwashed by ultra-conservative talk radio and Fox News cable tv. I’m amazed at the influence the Koch brothers have wielded when I see the extent of this brainwashing. I’m perfectly willing to listen to reasonable people counter my personal viewpoint. But it must be done in a positive, fact based manner. No name calling, no scare tactics, no lying. I’m waiting.
