SHIRLEY M. MENTINK

Shirley M. Mentink, age 85, formerly of Waldo, Wis., passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, Dec. 31, 2013, at Pine Haven Assisted Living in Sheboygan Falls, Wis.

Shirley was born Sept. 17, 1928 in Sheboygan, Wis., a daughter of the late Elmer and Lillian (Schoeder) Kind. She attended Sheboygan grade schools and graduated from Central High School in 1946.

On April 24, 1948, she married Willard G. “Bill” Mentink at St. Luke’s Methodist Church in Sheboygan. The couple resided in the town of Lima until 1957 when they purchased their farm in Waldo.

Shirley was employed at the Larson Canning Co. in Waldo in Quality Control for 31 years and at Mills Fleet Farm in Plymouth for five years.

Her husband preceded her in death April 23, 1995.

Shirley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Waldo and taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the church choir for over 20 years and served on many church committees. She was a charter member of the “Love thy Neighbors” Circle of The Kings Daughters for 25 years and a charter member of the Waldo Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for 35 years holding many positions and offices and helping at many fires. She also belonged to the Waldo Senior Group and the Cascade Meal Site.

Shirley enjoyed reading, her Cascade bowling leagues, working at the polls in Waldo, cards, games, working in the yard, crossword puzzles, watching the Packers and feeding and watching the birds and cherished spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons: Randall of Milwaukee and Dean (Sally) and Jack (Lee Ann), both of Rolla, Mo.; one daughter, Vicki Hanson (special friend, Mark Johnson) of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren: Erik Mentink, Kimberly (Ben) Jenkins, David (Brook) Mentink, Phillip Mentink, Joy Mentink, Jonathan (Vanessa) Hanson, Jason Hanson, Jamie (Brian) Poole and Stacy (Todd) Thuemmler; six great-grandchildren: Jacob, Parker, Morgan, Hanna, Sam and Hattie; one sister-inlaw, Delores Martin of Arizona; good and dear friend, Judy Stoneman of Cascade; and also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one granddaughter, Erica Mentink; two brothers, Leroy and Wayne and one sister, Carol.

Funeral services were held Saturday morning, Jan. 4, 2014, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Waldo. The Rev. Nhia Wahn Her, pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was in the Hingham Cemetery.

A memorial fund is being established in Shirley’s name for Trinity United Methodist Church in Waldo or the Waldo Volunteer Fire Department.
