Warriors rally to edge Tigers in overtime battle

FREDONIA – Ozaukee rallied in the second half to force overtime where it pulled out a 58-56 win over the Howards Grove Tigers in boys basketball action here Friday night.

The Warriors, who overcame a 38-31 halftime deficit, scored the first four points in the overtime period on Jacob Wolff’s three-point goal and Owen Miller’s free throw to grab a 57-53 lead.

Howards pulled to within 57-56 with 55 seconds left on Ethan Brinkman’s free throw and a steal and layup by Austin Edge. The Tigers then stole the ball but threw it out of bounds.

After a missed free throw by Ozaukee with 26 seconds remaining, the Tigers missed two field-goal attempts before fouling Miller with three seconds showing. Miller made one foul shot which upped his team’s lead to 58-56.

The Tigers missed a three-quarter-length shot at the buzzer.

The Warriors improved to 2-4 in the Central Lakeshore Conference (3-7 overall). Howards dropped to 3-3 in the CLC (6-4 overall).

The Tigers led 49-39 with 5:41 left in the fourth period. Ozaukee ran off 10 unanswered points to tie the game, 49-49, at the 3:58 mark. Miller keyed the spurt with five points.

Andrew Reinemann’s threepoint shot missed at the buzzer.

“We played a pretty good game from start to finish but missed opportunities hurt us down the stretch,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“Our guys played very hard and I know we took another step in the right direction as a team. You have give Ozaukee credit because they made some big plays in key moments of the game.”

Edge, a senior guard, had a strong all-around game as he led the Tigers in scoring with 16 points, assists, eight and rebounds with eight. CJ Berg also pulled down eight boards.

Andy Richter led the Warriors’ attack with 14 points. Ozaukee sank eight three-pointers.

The Tigers were only 8-for-15 at the foul line for 53 percent.

Howards won the junior varsity 1 and 2 games, 57-50 and 56-47, respectively.
