Tigers cruise to third straight win

FREDONIA – Howards Grove ran their winning streak to three with a 41-23 rout over Ozaukee in girls basketball action here Saturday.

The Tigers hiked their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 5-3 (6-6 overall). The Warriors dropped to 2-6 in CLC play (3-9 overall).

Howards broke the game open with a 16-5 scoring edge in the third quarter to mount a 33-16 lead. Senior guard-forward Courtney Milz ignited the Tigers’ offense in the quarter with six points.

The Tigers blew out to a 13-2 lead after one quarter, led by Milz’s six points. Ozaukee rallied in the second – outscoring Howards 9-4 to cut the deficit to 17-11 at halftime.

“We played another nice defensive game. We didn’t allow any player to score in double digits and we did a nice job getting out on their shooters,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“In the first half we really pounded the ball inside to exploit the size difference. When they went to the zone we were able to still get inside looks and we didn’t settle for only outside shots which is something we’ve been working on.”

Senior forward Taylor Beninghaus led Howards in scoring with 16 points and Milz hit 14. Beninghaus was an outstanding 8-for-11 from the field for 73 percent.

Brittany Schaller paced the Tigers in assists with five and Beninghaus dished out three. Beninhaus had a team-high four steals and Schaller, three. The Tigers had an impressive 13 steals.

Beninghaus had a strong overall performance as she also led her team in rebounding with six along with Erin Valenstein.
