Milz, Stauss fuel Tigers’ CLC win

SHEBOYGAN – Courtney Milz had a double-double and Olivia Stauss contributed key scoring to lead the Howards Grove Tigers to a 51-47 girls basketball win over host Sheboygan Christian Thursday night.

The Tigers, who ended a two-game slide, upped their third-place Central Lakeshore Conference record to 6-4 (7-8 overall). The Eagles, who are second in the CLC, dropped to 8-2 in the league (10-4 overall).

Milz, a senior guardforward, had a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds. Stauss, a freshman guard, contributed 11 points to go with two assists. Taylor Beninghaus also tallied 11 points for the Tigers who overcame a 23-19 halftime deficit.

“Our goals were to rebound better than we did against them the first game [a 33-29 win by the Eagles] and to play harder than they did. I felt we did a good job with both goals,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“I think we just had more gas in the tank than they did. They only played six girls to our 11. I wanted having a deeper bench to matter in the game and I believe it did.”

Morgan Edge paced Howards in assists with five and Brittany Schaller handed out three. Edge also led in steals with three.

“Olivia provided a much- needed offensive spark. She scored 11 points and really drove to the hoop well and was aggressive on offense which fills a much- needed role on this team,” said Georgeff.

“Courtney also had a nice offensive game. She was 2-for-2 in the second half [from the field] and made some key baskets.

“Morgan is our conservative floor leader. She didn’t stand out in the stats in this game but she runs the show out there for us and tries to get things going for others,” the coach pointed out.

Beninghaus scored a key basket down the stretch which gave Howards the lead for good. Her field goal was set up by a pass from Edge who had driven to the hoop.

Hannah Modahl and Carissa Wisse led the Eagles’ offense with 17 points each. Wisse also grabbed a team-high 13 boards.
