However, there were no smiles on his face in the first quarter.

New Holstein raced out to a quick 11-2 lead and still held a 15-10 advantage after one quarter before the visiting Tigers put a halt to the Husky offense and scored a convincing 74-54 nonconference win.

“We can’t afford to let that happen too often,” said Worth, moments after the win, about his teams’ slow start.

“New Holstein took it to us early. But I think that’s where our seniors know how to react. We didn’t panic. We kept our composure.”

Ethan Brinkman and Austin first half to lead 31-26 at the break. Brinkman had 24 in the contest and Edge added 22. Trent Beninghaus added 12 points for the Tigers, now 11-7 overall.

A 16-6 spurt in the third quarter put the Huskies down by double figures and they would not threaten.

Edge led Howards in assists with six. Beninghaus had a team-best seven rebounds.

“We just ran out of gas,” said Huskies head coach Ken Stephany.

“We’ve played a lot of ball in the past week and have a lot more coming up.”

Josh Burg had a team-high 12 points for the Huskies who fell to 6-13.

JV, FRESHMAN GAMES

The junior varsity game went to the Huskies, 60-49, as Devin Strupp poured in 18 points and Anthony James 16 to lead the winners. For Howards, Devin Gallenberger had a game-best 19 points while Nick Brickner added seven.

After a close first half in which Howards led just 25-22, the Tiger freshmen came out strong in the second half and rolled to a 61-41 victory. Bryce Pedrin paced the Tigers’ attack with 16 points, Josh Scheuren added 14 points and Caleb Holzman 10 for Howards.

The Huskies had balanced scoring with Dylan James having 11 points, Owen Olsen 10 and Cody Beck nine.
