Defense keys fourth straight win for Howards Grove

RANDOM LAKE – The Howards Grove Tigers’ defense clamped down in the fourth quarter to key a 45-37 boys basketball win over host Random Lake Thursday night.

Howards held the Rams to only four points in the final period while scoring nine to pull away. The Tigers outscored the Rams 25-17 in the second half after the teams battled to a 20-20 deadlock at halftime.

The Tigers, winners of four in a row, pushed their Central Lakeshore Conference record to 9-5 (13-7 overall). The Rams dropped to 3-11 in the CLC (5- 15 overall).

“It was a very competitive game from start to finish. We didn’t shoot the ball real well but I thought our guys really competed hard,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“It was neck and neck until halfway through the fourth quarter where we were able to pull away a little bit. We did a nice job pressuring the ball as a unit and were able to get some key turnovers down the stretch.”

Ethan Brinkman led Howards in scoring with 18 points and Austin Edge added 11. Edge had a team-high five assists. Luke Stanczyk led in rebounds with six.

“I thought our guys really demonstrated good toughness down the stretch and ultimately it seemed to be the determining factor,” Worth pointed out.

Logan Martin and Aaron Rathke paced the Rams in scoring with 10 apiece. Andy Fechter grabbed a team-high nine boards.
