Entering the Central Lakeshore Conference game against Cedar Grove-Belgium, the Resorters had won five of their last eight games, after starting the season with three wins and 10 losses. The Rockets outscored Elkhart 25-11 in the third quarter to key a 58-38 rout.

Elkhart, which ended the regular season at 4-12 in the CLC and 8-14 overall, enters the WIAA playoffs with a Division 5 first-round regional matchup at Living Word Lutheran (11-11 overall) in Jackson Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.

After several minutes, Bett was carried to the team bench area with a lower leg injury. Bett did not return to the game.

Junior Trevor Taubenheim stepped up for the Resorters and took control of his team which Brown said the team needed after the loss of Bett. In the final 2:52 of the first half, Taubenheim was able to penetrate into the lane and score five points. Taubenheim added multiple rebounds with an all-out effort.

The game did not begin with the traditional mid-court jump ball because a technical foul was called against Cedar Grove for reporting an incorrect number of a player to the scorers. As a result of the technical foul, Bett made two free throws, giving the Resorters a 2-0 lead without any time expiring from the game clock.

Elkhart also gained possession after the free throws but turned it over. Unfortunately for the Resorters, the free throws were their only scores during the first quarter while committing five turnovers. Cedar Grove was able to make two threepoint baskets and three two-point baskets on the way to a 12-2 at the end of first quarter.

Elkhart continued its slow, methodical offense in the second quarter, trying to find a way to beat Cedar Grove’s box-and-one defense designed to contain Bett. Bett scored three points on a free throw and a field goal, while Elkhart held Cedar Grove to one basket in the first 5:08 of the second quarter and trailed 14- 5.

After Bett’s injury, Cedar Grove was able to score eight points and take a 22-10 lead into the halftime break.

Elkhart began the second half with possession of the ball and Taubenheim was able to convert two free throws to close to 22-12. Cedar Grove then converted the next 12 points to gain a 34-12 lead before A.J. Lallensack was able to make a free throw for the Resorters.

During Cedar Grove’s scoring burst, the Resorters had to change from thier patient, methodical offense to using a full-court press in an attempt to force turnovers. Cedar Grove’s own full court press against Elkhart also helped speed up the game. The third quarter ended with the Rockets leading 47-21.

The fourth quarter resulted in Elkhart outscoring the Rockets by six points but the damage had been done in the third quarter and Cedar Grove’s lead was insurmountable.

Cedar Grove’s RJ Lemmermann led all scorers with 16 points and Taubenheim led Elkhart with 14.
