EL’s attack struggles in regional loss

JACKSON – Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah played strong defense but was unable to overcome the absence of standout senior forward Antonio Bett as it fell to Living Word Lutheran, 38-28, in a Division 5 boys regional basketball firstround game here Tuesday night.

Bett, who averaged a team-high 23 points and 11 rebounds this season, sustained a badly sprained ankle in Friday’s game against Cedar Grove-Belgium.

“It made it real difficult without Antonio. It was unfortunate. He is such a hard worker,” said Resorter head coach Jim Brown.

“I am so proud of these kids. What a great effort tonight. They just came up short. We could’ve won this game even without Antonio.”

The Resorters led 17-16 at halftime but the Timber Wolves switched to a zone defense in the third quarter which forced Elkhart to shoot mostly from the perimeter. The Resorters went cold in the period as they were outscored 10-0 which gave Living Word a 26-17 lead.

Elkhart closed the gap to four in the fourth quarter but were unable to cut the deficit any more. John Winter helped seal the win with eight of his game-high 12 points in the final period.

The No.-5 seeded Resorters ended their season with an 8-15 record. Living Word, a No. 4 seed, advances to the semifinals Friday at top-seeded Sheboygan Lutheran at 7 p.m.

Jordan Kissinger and Trevor Taubenheim led Elkhart in scoring with 10 points each. Kissinger hit all of his points in the first half. Taubenheim had a team-high seven rebounds and AJ Lallensack contributed six.

Taubenheim also led the team in steals with five, followed by Lallensack with four.

Brown thought Taubenheim, Lallensack and Kissinger played well.

“We played pretty well, defensively. Our defense gave us a chance,” Brown said.

Elkhart shot only 22 percent (9 of 41) from the field.
