Panthers’ Wiese sharp heading into state

PLYMOUTH — Senior Austin Wiese of Plymouth is peaking at just the right time as he enters the Division 1 state wrestling tournament which begins Thursday, Feb. 27 and runs through Saturday at UWMadison’s Kohl Center.

Wiese, 21-8, has overcome a knee injury which sidelined him during the middle of the season. He earned his first state berth with a runner-up finish at 152 pounds in Saturday’s sectional meet at Sheboygan South.

Wiese will face Mukwonago senior Tommy Kolasinki (42-4) in the first round which starts at 3 p.m. on Thursday. The winner advances to the quarterfinals Thursday evening. The loser has an opportunity to place as high as third if he goes into the consolation bracket.

“My goal for Austin is to enjoy the experience of being a state qualifier and going out and performing to the best of his ability,” said Panther head coach Lucas Lechnir.

“At this point, as long as Austin goes out and does things that are going to give him a chance to win I will have no problems. Of course, it would be nice to see him walk away from Madison with a medal. I think that is his ultimate goal as well.”

Lechnir said Wiese wrestled Kolasinski during the summer and the matches were fairly close.

“It happens every year that kids who are hot come down and do very well. You never know with high school athletes what is going to happen,” said Lechnir.

The coach pointed out the keys for Weise to have a shot at winning his opening match.

“The keys for Austin winning in the first round will be controlling the ties on his feet, winning off the whistle on the bottom and riding tough,” Lechnir noted.

“Austin has put it together at the right time. He has been one of the most talented kids in the room since his freshmen year but wasn’t able to put it all together. He is wrestling really well right now and we are excited about our chances this weekend.”

Lechnir said Wiese has been bothered by the knee injury all season but doesn’t think it will be much of an issue at state.
