Meinnert leads PHS boys at Manitowoc Invitational

MANITOWOC – Senior Westley Meinnert finished second in the shot put to lead the Plymouth Panthers in the Saturday’s Manitowoc Invitational boys indoor track meet.

Meinnert had a toss of 44-½. The Panthers’ next-highest competitor was senior Tom Jankowski with a third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2 minutes, 13.29 seconds. Jankowski also took fifth in the 1,600 in 5:07.13.

PHS placed 10th in the 14-team field with 34 points. Kaukauna was first with 130.

Plymouth competed in the girls Manitowoc Invitational meet Friday and finished 13th out of 15 teams with 21 points. Appleton North earned the title with 95.

The Panthers were paced by junior Julia Novotny who earned third in the 1,600 run in 5:27.29. The team’s next-best finisher was junior Abby Payne with a fifth in the 3,200 in 13:14.07.

“Our boys had a decent meet. We got strong days from Westley in the shot put and Tom in both the 800 and 1,600 runs,” said PHS head coach Jay Grosshuesch.

“Also our relay teams competed well. We have some work to do to get to the level we want to be at but we have time to get there as well.

“Our girls competed well. We had nice meets from our distance runners and throwers, with strong efforts from Julia in the 1,600 and Kyra [Kronberg] in the shot put [with sixth place].

“A lot of our other girls are real close to their personal records from last year and just missed scoring. If we keep working hard, these girls’ efforts will improve and we will get more of our athletes to score,” said Grosshuesch.
