Kestell giving up Assembly seat

State Rep. Steve Kestell, R-Elkhart Lake, has announced that he will not be a candidate for re-election to the State Assembly from the 27th District this fall.

“At the close of the 2013-2014 legislative session and following discussions with my family, I have decided to not seek re-election to the State Assembly in 2014,” Kestell said in a press release.

“I am extremely grateful to have had the honor of serving the citizens of this great state, and I will be forever thankful to the voters of the 27th Assembly District for their support over the years,” Kestell’s statement continued. “I want to thank my family for their continuous encouragement, and my wonderful wife LuAnne for being my rock and best cheerleader. Throughout my time in office, I’ve been fortunate to have worked with outstanding staff who have dedicated themselves to serving the people of the 27th Assembly District, and for that I am extremely grateful.”

Kestell, 58, was first elected to the Assembly in 1998 and is completing his seventh term in Madison. He won election in 1998 to succeed Republican Clifford Otte by defeating Democrat Joe DeCecco, currently the Sheboygan County district attorney.

A graduate of Plymouth High School, Kestell served 15 years on the Howards Grove School Board, including three years as president, before being elected to the Assembly.

“During my years in the state Legislature, I’ve worked every day to uphold the belief that elected officials should strive to do the right thing, for the right reason, and in the right way,” Kestell’s statement goes on.

“I am proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and I look forward to new challenges as the future unfolds.”

The 27th Assembly District includes the towns of Herman, Mosel, Plymouth, Rhine and Sheboygan Falls, as well as part of the town of Sheboygan and part of the north side of the city of Sheboygan in Sheboygan County, as well as part of southern Manitowoc County.
