Rams sweep Tigers in CLC twinbill

RANDOM LAKE – The defending Central Lakeshore Conference softball champion Howards Grove Tigers opened their season here Thursday by dropping a doubleheader to Random Lake, 5-4 and 15-7 in cold, windy weather.

The CLC twinbill was also the Rams’ first games of the season.

In the opener, the Tigers rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh inning on Robyn Bitter’s bases-clearing double but Bitter was left stranded at second base. _ ______________

Hannah Huiras was the winning pitcher as she allowed three earned runs on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts in going the distance.

Lyndsay Peterson took the loss. Peterson threw a complete game and gave up four earned runs on five hits with four walks and one strikeout.

Peterson led Howards in hits with two. Bitter had a team-high three RBIs.

Calli Helminger paced the Rams in hits with two. Emma Schimberg walked twice and scored a team-best two runs.

GAME TWO

The cold temperatures affected the pitchers more in the second game as 24 walks were issued by the three hurlers combined.

The Rams broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the sixth inning. Schimberg’s inside-the-park home run capped off the inning.

Schimberg sparked the Rams’ attack with a team-high three hits, including two doubles, and six RBIs. Bailey Sanderson contributed two hits and two walks.

Bitter and Sydney Handel led the Tigers’ offense with two hits apiece. Handel had a team-high three RBIs and Bitter, two. Bitter also walked twice.

Ashley Risse was the winning hurler despite walking 14 batters. Risse allowed five earned runs on six hits and fanned two in going the route.

Freshman Taylor Bubolz was the starting and losing pitcher. Bubolz gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits with eight walks and zero strikeouts in five frames.

“I was disappointed in our hitting. Our defense was OK, considering we have not been able to play on an actual field yet which makes playing defense interesting,” said Tiger head coach Tom Heier.

“Random definitely had a defensive advantage as they have been on their diamond for a while. Random definitely outhit us but this is the beginning of a very interesting conference race this season.
