Young Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah team has lots of promise, versatility

ELKHART LAKE – The 2014 Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorters softball team will have a significantly different look from the 2013 roster.

Eight freshmen join four returning letter winners from a 2013 lineup that finished second in the Central Lakeshore Conference with a 10-4 league record and was 13-5 overall.

Second-year Resorter head coach Brian Feldmann pointed out the keys for the team to be successful.

“Getting the young ladies up to speed in the game of softball. You have to play clean with no errors and play great defense,” said Feldmann.

The returning letter winners, all starters last year, include senior pitcher-infielder Aryanna Klemme, senior infielder Miranda Sippel, sophomore infielder-outfielder Emma Feldmann and sophomore pitcher-infielder Rachael Flora.

“I will be leaning on my two seniors, Aryanna Klemme and Miranda Sippel, along with my two sophomores, Emma Feldmann and Rachael Flora.”

Feldmann and Flora return as the team’s leading CLC hitters from 2013, with .432 and .426 averages, respectively.

Coach Feldmann said the team has great pitching which is led by Klemme, a 2013 unanimous choice as a first-team all-conference pitcher, with a 10-3 conference record and .327 batting average. She will be joined on the mound by freshman Holly Zorn.

Sippel returns for her senior season after batting .378 with nine RBIs and earning 2013 All-CLC honorable mention.

The coach pointed out the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

“The strengths are pitching and the catching positions along with strong offense. The weaknesses are youth, with seven freshmen – getting them up to speed of the varsity game.

“I think all the newcomers have impressed me. They are very coachable young ladies,” said the coach.

“I have a team where I can move people around to different positions to keep a good balance. My depth is good. We have great athletes.”

Coach Feldmann expects quality play in the CLC this year and does not see any team with a significant advantage over the others. He expects his team to be in contention for the title. Howards Grove is the three-time defending league champion.

He said the team goals for the season include winning the conference and moving deep into the playoffs. Last season, the Resorters defeated Stockbridge in a Division 4 regional first-round game and then lost to Markesan in the semifinals.

“We need to build confidence early to help with a quick and busy season,” he said.
