Tigers drop season opener

MOUNT CALVARY – The Howards Grove/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Tigers and host St. Lawrence Seminary battled the elements Tuesday afternoon, with the Hilltoppers netting a 6-1 boys tennis victory.

The nonconference dual meet was the Tigers’ season opener. Howards’ scheduled debut was last Saturday in the Catholic Memorial Invitational at Ripon College but it was rained out. It hasn’t been determined if the meet will be rescheduled.

“It was a very cold match at St. Lawrence and there were a couple matches that could have gone either way,” said Tiger head coach Elizabeth Hill. _ _ _

Tiger senior Andrew Reinemann lost a tough match at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-7. Reinemann lost the second-set tiebreaker, 7-9.

Another close match which the Hilltoppers emerged victorious was at No. 1 doubles where Howards’ Zach Fritz and Keegan Rhynas fell, 4-6, 5-7.

Junior Luke Stanczyk was the Tigers’ only winner. Stanczyk rallied to defeat Anh Huy Troung 1-6, 6-2. In the deciding third set, Stanczyk won on points, 10-2.

“Luke Stanczyk played a strong match. After losing the first set 1-6, he came back to win the second set along with the third-set tiebreaker,” said Hill.

“Our No. 1 doubles came back after being down 0-4 in the second set when they won four straight games. Andrew Reinemann played a very strong match.”
