Resorters have high hopes this season

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

ELKHART LAKE – Bart Larson, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah head boys golf coach, is optimistic about the 2014 season with a solid nucleus of three varsity players returning.

The Resorters are coming off a strong 2013 campaign in which they advanced to Division 3 sectional play with a share of second place in their regional meet and finished 7-1 in Central Lakeshore Conference duals (8-1 overall) which tied them for first with Kohler. Elkhart took eighth in the sectional.

“I am optimistic we are going to have a good year. I really like the group of guys on the team. They are very high-character student athletes, so it should be a fun year,” said Larson who enters his 10th season at Elkhart.

The returning players are senior letter winners Antonio Bett and Jake Shovan, and junior letter ___* _- _ _ winners Elliot Van Oss – all who competed in the sectional last year. Larson expects this trio to lead the squad this year. Bett was an All- CLC first-team golfer last season.

Larson pointed out the team’s strengths and weaknesses.

“We have three guys [Bett, Shovan and Van Oss] who were able to get some quality varsity opportunities. We have good senior leadership,” he pointed out.

“The weakness is low numbers. We only have seven kids out for golf this year.

“We will have to find fourth and fifth guys [for the varsity lineup] but someone will step up.”

Larson said the keys for the

Resorters to have success are playing smart golf, and staying healthy because of the few numbers.

Kohler is the three-time defending CLC overall champion (combines duals and tournament). The Blue Bombers, who also won the league tourney in 2013, earned fifth in the D-3 state tourney last year. Oostburg and Howards Grove tied for second overall in the CLC race, followed by the Resorters.

“The CLC is always competitive. It will be interesting how it shakes out,” said Larson.

Asked what his top goals are for the season, Larson responded: “We want to improve and be playing our best golf at the end of the season.”
